News - Whole Crop Forages - Harvesting

The most modern forage harvesters have special grain crackers included and this should improve the utilisation of the grain from whole crop forages. This may make the crop more attractive to livestock farmers.

The table below gives an indication of the stages that whole crop cereals can be harvested and the three most common types of silage.

Whole Crop DM % Silage Description Crop Colour Grain Texture Grain Moisture %
35-50 Fermented Whole Crop Green with Ear turning Yellow Soft Dough to Soft Cheesy Over 45
51-65 Urea-Treated Ear & Stem Yellow Hard Cheesy 35
66-80 Alkalage Turning Golden Brown Grain Hard Between 25 and 30

Maize and whole crop cereals have lower protein and mineral content than grass silage and supplementation is necessary.

Forage grain:

Cereal crops can also be harvested at higher moistures for grain (30-40%) and processed by use of additives (e.g. crimping, acid, caustic, urea or innoculant treatment) so that the grain can be ensiled and fed by utilising existing silage handling equipment.
